PHORMIUM COOKIANUM BLACK ADDER

Plant code: PHM-CBA

Phormium cookianum ‘Black Adder’ is an ornamental variety of flax from New Zealand, appreciated for its dark, glossy and strongly architectural foliage. This evergreen cultivar, belonging to the Asphodelaceae family, stands out for its elegant shape and graphic structure, ideal for creating strong and dynamic contrasts in modern, exotic or Mediterranean gardens. The leaves, ribbon-like, long and slightly arched, have a deep and intense colour: a very dark purple tending towards black, which remains stable throughout the year. The surface is glossy and flexible, giving the plant a tidy but at the same time scenic appearance. This particular shade makes ‘Black Adder’ an element of strong visual impact, perfect both as an isolated specimen and in groups or combinations with light-leaved plants or bright blooms. Unlike other more erect varieties, Phormium cookianum has a softer and more open habit, with leaves that tend to arch elegantly outwards. It generally reaches a height of about 1-1.2 meters, with a similar width, maintaining a balanced and tidy habit. In summer it can produce aerial inflorescences on rigid stems, with reddish tubular flowers, although flowering in the garden is not always guaranteed. The plant is grown mainly for the decorative value of its foliage. Phormium ‘Black Adder’ prefers positions in full sun or partial shade and adapts to a wide range of soils, as long as they are well drained. It is resistant to wind and salt, which makes it suitable for coastal gardens. Tolerant to drought once well established, it tolerates moderate winter temperatures, but in areas subject to prolonged frosts it is preferable to grow it in a pot or in sheltered positions. For its bold appearance, low maintenance and landscape versatility, Phormium cookianum ‘Black Adder’ is an excellent choice to enhance borders, contemporary flowerbeds and green spaces in minimalist or exotic style.
