EUONYMUS JAPONICUS BENKOMASAKI
A columnar cultivar of the species Euonymus japonicus, ‘Benkomasaki’ is a compact and structured evergreen, native to eastern Asia and belonging to the Celastraceae family. It is characterised by slow and regular growth and by its erect and narrow vegetative habit, with slightly divergent vertical branches that define a compact, tidy and vertical silhouette. The leaves are persistent, small, elliptical in shape, slightly wavy, with smooth or finely toothed edges. The color is a shiny and uniform dark green, which remains stable all year round, contributing to a well-groomed appearance. The flowering, not very showy, occurs between late spring and early summer with small yellow-greenish flowers. ‘Benkomasaki’ prefers sunny or partially shaded exposures and adapts well to different types of soil, as long as they are well-drained. It shows good tolerance to wind, pollution and saltiness, making it suitable also in urban or marine contexts. It has good rusticity in temperate climates and does not require frequent pruning to maintain its natural shape. Particularly appreciated for its formal or minimalist greenery, it is used in narrow hedges, vertical borders, architectural compositions or as a single plant in a pot, where it offers a sculptural and tidy presence with limited maintenance.
