XCUPRESSOCYPARIS LEYLANDII

Plant code: CUP LEY V

Cupressocyparis leylandii, commonly known as Leyland cypress, is a fast-growing evergreen tree that belongs to the Cupressaceae family. This natural hybrid is born from the cross between the cypress Cupressus macrocarpa and the cypress Chamaecyparis nootkatensis. Native to the British Isles, it is a very popular plant in gardens and urban landscapes for its ability to create green screens and high-density privacy barriers. The growth habit of Cupressocyparis leylandii is erect, with a conical shape that can reach considerable heights of 15-20 meters, with a spread of 4-6 meters when mature. Its rapid growth makes it an ideal choice for those who want a tall screen or a thick hedge in a short time. The plant has a dense branching structure, which makes it perfect for creating green barriers, dividers or as an ornamental element in gardens and parks. The leaves are scaleopropia, small, dark green in color, arranged in a spiral along the branches. This foliage remains green throughout the year, even in the winter months, giving the plant a very decorative evergreen appearance. Cupressocyparis leylandii does not flower and does not produce significant fruit; however, its leaves and its rapid growth are sufficient to make it a highly sought-after plant for ornamental and functional purposes. The plant is resistant and suitable for a wide range of soils, as long as they are well-drained. It prefers sunny exposures, but can also tolerate light shade. Leyland cypress is relatively drought tolerant once established, but during drier periods it will require regular watering to maintain healthy, vigorous growth. Despite its hardiness, in very cold climates, it may be necessary to protect the roots from severe frosts, especially in the first few years of planting. Cupressocyparis leylandii is a plant that can be easily pruned, allowing it to maintain the desired shape, especially when used as a hedge or green screen. Regular pruning helps to contain growth and promote a tidy appearance. However, it is important to pay attention to its rapid growth, as excessive pruning can weaken the plant. This species is highly valued for its ability to grow quickly and form privacy barriers, acoustic screens or as a structuring element in gardens. In addition, its resistance, combined with the ability to tolerate different environmental conditions, makes it ideal for use in gardens, avenues, parks and along property boundaries.
