SPARTIUM JUNCEUM
Spartium junceum is an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub belonging to the Fabaceae family, native to the Mediterranean area and widely distributed for its resistance, rusticity and intensely scented flowering. Commonly known as Spanish broom or scented broom, it is an ornamental plant with a great impact in Mediterranean gardens, whether naturalistic or low-maintenance. The habit is erect and slightly expanded, with green, thin and flexible branches, similar to rushes, hence the name of the species (junceum). The photosynthetic stems are smooth and cylindrical, and play a fundamental role during the dry season, when the small deciduous leaves are absent. The actual leaves are in fact linear and very small, arranged alternately, but tend to fall early, leaving the plant with an essential and bare appearance for most of the year. The real attraction of Spartium junceum is its summer flowering, which occurs between May and July with abundant clusters of intense yellow, papilionaceous flowers, with a sweet and penetrating scent. The flowers develop along the branches and attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. After flowering, the plant produces linear pods, black when ripe, containing numerous seeds. It is a shrub that can reach 2-3 meters in height, with a balanced development also in width, forming rounded and light bushes. It is often used in groups, as an isolated specimen or to naturalize slopes and poor soils, thanks to its ability to grow in dry conditions and in difficult soils, including sandy, gravelly or poor in nutrients. Spartium junceum prefers positions in full sun and adapts very well to hot and dry climates. It is highly resistant to drought and wind, and also tolerates coastal environments and calcareous soils. It requires excellent drainage and is sensitive to water stagnation. It does not require frequent pruning, but it can be contained and rejuvenated with interventions at the end of flowering. Due to its rusticity, the scent of its flowers and its ability to grow even in difficult conditions, Spartium junceum is an ideal plant for Mediterranean gardens, naturally managed green spaces, or for those looking for spectacular flowering without high maintenance requirements.
