PRUNUS LUSITANICA ANGUSTIFOLIA

Plant code: PRU-LA

Prunus lusitanica ‘Angustifolia’, also known as Portuguese narrow-leaved laurel, is an elegant, evergreen variety characterised by dense, glossy, slender foliage, which gives the plant a particularly refined appearance compared to the common cherry laurel. It is an ideal species for the formation of formal or natural hedges, as well as for isolated use in ornamental gardens, thanks to its combination of robustness and aesthetic value. The leaves, narrow and elongated ⤔ hence the name angustifolia ⤔ are a deep, bright green, leathery and slightly wavy at the edges. Unlike the larger varieties of Prunus lusitanica, this selection has a more compact and tidy habit, with a finer texture of the foliage. The young branches, often reddish in color, create a very interesting visual contrast with the dark green of the crown. Flowering occurs in late spring or early summer, with the emission of erect panicles composed of small, white, scented flowers that attract pollinating insects. The plant can then produce small, black, spherical berries that persist for a long time and provide food for wildlife. Prunus lusitanica ‘Angustifolia’ grows at a moderate rate, reaching heights of between 3 and 5 metres, but tolerates pruning well, even frequent pruning, which makes it suitable for management as a compact, shaped hedge. In free form, it can develop a more slender and elegant shape, sometimes columnar, while always maintaining a dense crown from base to top. This variety adapts easily to different types of soil, as long as they are well-drained, and performs well in both full sun and partial shade. It is resistant to cold, wind and air pollution, making it suitable for use in urban areas or along avenues. It is also fairly drought tolerant once established. Due to its sober and structured appearance, the persistence of its foliage and its great versatility, Prunus lusitanica ‘Angustifolia’ is an excellent choice for those who want an evergreen hedge plant that combines ornamental value and functionality, with limited maintenance and a great capacity for adaptation.
