PITTOSPORUM TOBIRA “NANUM”
Pittosporum tobira ‘Nanum’ is a dwarf variety of the better-known Pittosporum tobira, selected for its compact and tidy shape and the sober beauty of its foliage. It is a slow-growing evergreen, ideal for the formation of low borders, formal hedges or as an ornamental plant in pots. Its contained and easily manageable nature makes it particularly suitable for architectural contexts or gardens with a regular design. The foliage is made up of oval, leathery, shiny and bright green leaves, slightly smaller than the typical species. The leaves are arranged densely along the branches, contributing to the dense and compact structure of the plant, which tends to develop in a naturally rounded way. Even without frequent pruning, ‘Nanum’ maintains a neat and pleasantly geometric shape, a quality much appreciated in formal or minimalist gardens. Flowering occurs in spring, with small, white, scented flowers, gathered in small clusters. The flowers are reminiscent of the scent of citrus fruits and, although not particularly showy, add a pleasant and discreet note to the plant during the spring period. In the months following flowering, small, rounded fruits may appear that persist for a long time, but remain in the background compared to the ornamental value of the foliage. Pittosporum tobira ‘Nanum’ generally reaches a height of between 60 and 80 cm, with a similar development in width, maintaining balanced proportions. It is an excellent choice for creating borders or low hedges, especially in places where a neat and tidy effect is desired without the need for frequent interventions. This variety is extremely adaptable and rustic. It tolerates exposure to direct sun as well as partial shade, and adapts easily to different types of soil, as long as they are well drained. It has good resistance to drought once well rooted, and also performs well in coastal environments thanks to its tolerance to saltiness. In areas with harsh winters, it is advisable to ensure a sheltered position or grow it in a container. Due to its compact appearance, resistance to difficult conditions and ease of management, Pittosporum tobira ‘Nanum’ is an extremely versatile plant, suitable for both contemporary landscaping projects and classic or Mediterranean gardens.
