PHORMIUM TENAX SPECIAL RED

Plant code: PHM-TSR

Phormium tenax ‘Special Red’ is a New Zealand flax variety that is particularly appreciated for its robust foliage and the striking red hues that give the plant a bold, sculptural appearance. This cultivar stands out for its exotic beauty, ideal for modern gardens, coastal landscapes and spaces that require a touch of vibrant colour. The leaves of ‘Special Red’ are long, narrow and ribbon-like, characterised by a robustness that makes them visually very elegant. The predominant colour is a deep red that fades towards darker tones, creating a fascinating contrast with the sunlight. The red hues become even more vibrant during the warmer months, especially if the plant is exposed to full sun. The erect shape of the leaves and their well-defined shape give this variety a harmonious and imposing structure, which lends itself to being used as a central decorative element or in larger compositions. Phormium tenax ‘Special Red’ can reach an average height of 1.5-2 metres, with a width that develops proportionally. The shape is erect, with the leaves that expand like a fan from the centre, creating a tidy but imposing appearance, ideal for being positioned as a solitary plant or in borders. Thanks to its compact shape and vibrant colour, this variety is also particularly attractive in pots, where it can be displayed as an ornamental plant for terraces and small gardens. Flowering is infrequent but can occur during the summer, with tall flower stalks bearing spike-shaped inflorescences with tubular red or orange flowers. Although the flowering is not the main feature of interest, it adds an extra touch of exoticism to the plant, especially when combined with the bright foliage. Phormium ‘Special Red’ is hardy and easy to grow. It prefers well-drained soil and a sunny position, which enhances the vivid color of the leaves. It easily adapts to drought conditions, is tolerant of wind and salt, making it an excellent choice for coastal gardens. Although it can withstand relatively cold temperatures, in areas with prolonged frosts it is advisable to protect it or grow it in a pot and move it to a sheltered place during the winter. For its strong visual impact, resistance to difficult environmental conditions and beauty exotic, Phormium tenax ‘Special Red’ is an ideal choice for those who want a bold decorative element, combining aesthetics and functionality in any type of garden.
