PHORMIUM TENAX PURPUREUM
Phormium tenax ‘Purpureum’ is a vigorous and evergreen variety of New Zealand flax, characterized by robust and sculptural foliage of an intense purple color. It is one of the most classic and appreciated cultivars of the genus, ideal for creating clear architectural effects and marked color contrasts, both in contemporary gardens and in more natural contexts. The leaves are rigid, linear and ribbon-like, erect and slightly arched towards the apex, with parallel edges and a slightly waxy surface. The color, uniform and deep, varies from dark purple to bronze with purple reflections, which intensify with exposure to the sun. This austere and structured foliage gives the plant a decisive and formal appearance, also very appreciated for potted compositions or to enhance borders and flowerbeds with an essential design. Phormium tenax ‘Purpureum’ can reach important dimensions compared to the varieties of Phormium cookianum: up to 1.5-2 meters in height in favorable conditions, with a proportionate width. The bearing is vertical and imposing, while maintaining an orderly shape without the need for pruning. The plant can produce summer blooms on long erect stems, with branched inflorescences in dark red or copper tones, with a tubular appearance and very popular with pollinating insects. However, flowering is not constant or guaranteed, especially in cultivation ornamental. Phormium ‘Purpureum’ is an extremely resistant and adaptable plant. It tolerates drought, wind, saltiness and temperature changes well, and is therefore particularly suitable for coastal, Mediterranean or low-maintenance gardens. It prefers sunny exposures, which enhance the colour of the foliage, but it also adapts to partial shade. It tolerates moderate winter temperatures, but in areas subject to prolonged frosts it is advisable to offer protection or grow it in a pot. Due to its imposing presence, dark colour and extraordinary resistance, Phormium tenax ‘Purpureum’ is an ideal choice for those who want a decorative plant all year round, capable of giving structure, depth and a strong visual character to the landscape.
