PHORMIUM RAINBOW QUEEN

Plant code: PHM-RQ

Phormium cookianum 'Rainbow Queen' is an evergreen flax cultivar from New
Zealand with a great ornamental impact, known for its foliage with warm, streaked tones that
recall the colors of the sunset. It is a plant with an architectural and vigorous appearance,
ideal for creating bold color contrasts in modern, Mediterranean or exotic gardens.
The leaves are long, ribbon-like and slightly curved, arranged in a fan shape in dense,
tidy tufts. The color is the distinctive feature of this variety: on a bronze or olive-green background,
longitudinal streaks develop in various shades of pink, copper, cream and
orange, creating an iridescent visual effect, particularly intense in direct sunlight. The
result is a plant with a strong style, capable of attracting the eye and enhancing
even minimal compositions.
'Rainbow Queen' has a medium-sized development, generally reaching a height
of 1–1.2 meters and a similar width. The habit is slightly expanded, with leaves that
curve elegantly outwards, while maintaining an orderly and
well-structured shape even without pruning.
Flowering is an occasional event in cultivation and occurs, if present, during the
summer with the appearance of erect flower stems that carry small reddish or coppery
tubular flowers.
However, the main ornamental value remains in the perennial foliage, decorative
throughout the year.
Phormium 'Rainbow Queen' is a rustic and versatile plant. It adapts to different types of
soil, as long as they are well drained, and prefers sunny or semi-shaded exposures. Tolerant
to saltiness and winds, it is particularly suitable for coastal gardens. Once well
rooted, it tolerates drought and high temperatures well. In areas with harsh winters it is
advisable to protect it or grow it in a pot.

For its bright color, environmental resistance and sculptural structure, Phormium
cookianum 'Rainbow Queen' is an excellent choice for those who want a
scenographic plant, easy to manage and of great decorative value during all seasons.
