PHORMIUM PINK STRIPE
Phormium cookianum 'Pink Stripe' is an evergreen New Zealand flax cultivar
with a strong ornamental impact, selected for its lively foliage and elegant
habit. Characterized by bright pink streaks, this variety is ideal for
introducing color and movement into contemporary, Mediterranean or exotic gardens, as well
as in potted compositions.
The leaves, long, ribbon-like and slightly curved, grow in neat tufts and have a
flexible but robust consistency. The color is bright: on the green-bronze background
obvious deep pink streaks stand out, which can tend to fuchsia or light red depending
on the exposure and the season. The color contrast is clear but harmonious,
giving the plant a dynamic presence without being excessive.
The habit is expanded but composed, with a regular growth that leads the plant to
reach on average a height of about 1–1.2 meters, with a similar width. The fan shape, typical of Phormium, is well defined and does not require pruning to be
maintained.
Flowering is rare in cultivation, but in suitable climates it can appear in summer with erect and branched flowering stems, bearing tubular reddish-brown flowers. However, it is the decorative and persistent foliage that represents the main interest of the plant.
Phormium 'Pink Stripe' prefers sunny or semi-shaded exposures and grows well in
well-drained soil, even poor or sandy. It is resistant to wind and salt, therefore
also suitable for coastal gardens. Once well rooted, it tolerates long periods of drought. In
cold climates, it is advisable to protect it from severe frosts or grow it in a pot to move it
during the winter months.
For its intense leaf color and resistance to harsh environmental conditions,
Phormium cookianum 'Pink Stripe' is an excellent choice for those who want a bold, durable and low-maintenance ornamental
plant, suitable for both formal and natural arrangements.
