PHORMIUM PINK FLAMINGO
Phormium cookianum 'Pink Flamingo' is a variety of New Zealand flax with an elegant appearance and variegated foliage, particularly appreciated for its delicate but bright shades. It is an evergreen cultivar, with a strong but not excessive ornamental profile, ideal for enhancing borders, flowerbeds and potted compositions, both in modern gardens and in more natural contexts.
The leaves are long, flexible and ribbon-like, arranged in neat tufts. The colour is the distinctive feature of this variety: pale pink, cream and pinkish-red streaks run across the olive-green or greyish background, giving the plant a fresh, variegated and refined appearance. The pink shades tend to intensify with good exposure to light, creating pleasant but never excessive contrasts.
The shape is slightly arched, soft and neat. Growth is moderate, with an average height of 70 to 100 cm, and a similar width. This
small structure also makes 'Pink Flamingo' perfect for growing in pots or for
small spaces, where it can act as an element of light and color.
Flowering, rare in cultivation, can appear in summer on erect and branched stems, with
tubular flowers in coppery tones. However, it is the foliage that maintains the decorative interest
throughout the year.
Phormium cookianum 'Pink Flamingo' develops best in sunny exposures or in
bright partial shade, on well-drained soil. It tolerates saltiness and winds, making it
also suitable for coastal gardens. Once well established, it resists drought and difficult
environmental conditions. In climates subject to intense frosts, it is advisable to protect it in the winter months
or grow it in a container.
For its delicately bright color, its orderly structure and ease of
cultivation, Phormium 'Pink Flamingo' represents an interesting choice for
those who want an evergreen plant capable of bringing a touch of originality and lightness to
the garden or terrace.
