NANDINA DOMESTICA GULF STREAM
Nandina domestica ‘Gulf Stream’ is a compact, evergreen variety of the so-called ‘sacred bamboo’, prized for its decorative foliage and extraordinary ability to change colour with the changing seasons. Unlike the type species, this cultivar develops with a denser and more orderly habit, forming rounded and well-branched bushes, perfect for borders, low hedges, rock gardens or for growing in pots. The foliage of ‘Gulf Stream’ is finely composed and light in texture, similar to that of bamboo, but with a particularly interesting chromatic evolution: the young leaves emerge with bronze and copper shades, turn bright green in summer, and finally turn deep red and orange in autumn and winter. This seasonal change of color represents the main ornamental value of the plant, which remains decorative at any time of the year. Unlike the traditional Nandina domestica, ‘Gulf Stream’ rarely produces flowers or berries, but is distinguished by a naturally compact shape, which does not require frequent pruning. Growth is slow and contained: in adulthood it reaches a height of about 80-100 cm, with a similar width, maintaining a balanced and tidy structure. It prefers sunny or lightly shaded positions and adapts easily to different types of soil, as long as they are well drained. It tolerates the cold, short frosts and even periods of drought, once well rooted. Maintenance is minimal, making it an ideal plant for those who want a constant and easy-to-manage ornamental element. Nandina domestica ‘Gulf Stream’ is a versatile choice, perfect for contemporary or classic gardens, to create masses of colour, plays of texture or seasonal focal points even in small spaces.
