ILEX CRENATA CONVEXA
Ilex crenata ‘Convexa’ is a variety of evergreen holly of Asian origin, appreciated for its compact structure and small, dense and glossy foliage. Unlike the European varieties of Ilex, ‘Convexa’ has thornless leaves, slightly curved upwards – hence the name – with a shiny dark green surface that gives the plant an elegant and tidy appearance in every season. Growth is slow but constant, with a dense and rounded habit, which can be easily maintained with light pruning. It can reach heights of between one and two metres, with a similar spread, making it particularly suitable for low hedges, formal borders or as a plant to be shaped into geometric shapes. Its response to pruning is excellent: it tolerates precise shaping, making it a valid alternative to box, especially in areas where the latter is subject to fungal diseases. It produces small, inconspicuous whitish flowers in spring, followed by decorative black berries, which remain on the plant during the winter, adding visual interest. Its growing requirements are simple: it prefers slightly acidic, well-drained soils, and exposures from full sun to partial shade. It is resistant to cold and urban pollution, adapting well to container growing conditions. Thanks to its adaptability, year-round aesthetics and ease of management, Ilex crenata ‘Convexa’It is a solid choice for tidy greenery projects, formal gardens, public or private spaces where refined, tidy and long-lasting evergreen vegetation is required.
