CORDYLINE SOUTHERN SPLENDOR
This variety can reach a maximum height of about 2 meters, with a width of about 1 meter. The evergreen leaves have a narrow and elongated shape, similar to a sword, with tapered tips and a slight curvature in the more mature leaves. They measure between 40 and 90 cm in length and 3 to 7 cm in width at the base. The flowering, which occurs in summer on adult specimens, is made up of dense and abundant panicles, between 60 and 100 cm long, which bear small white flowers that are scented and rich in nectar. After flowering, each branch can divide in two. The fruits are roundish white berries, much appreciated by birds. As it ages, the plant develops a grey, fissured bark, with a curious corky appearance and a spongy consistency. Thanks to its resistance to wind and salt spray, this Cordyline is particularly suited to coastal areas. It can be used successfully as a central flowerbed plant, as a small ornamental tree for alignment, as a windbreak or even as an isolated specimen in gardens with a mild climate. It finds its ideal habitat along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, and tolerates temperatures down to -7°C. This allows it to be grown even in colder areas, as long as it is in large pots and moved to protected environments, such as a veranda, during the winter.
