Prunus lusitanica 'Brenelia' is an ornamental variety of Portuguese Laurel, selected
\nfor its accentuated decorative characteristics and the compact and regular structure of its
\ncrown. Evergreen, resistant and versatile, this cultivar represents a valid
\nalternative to the traditional cherry laurel for the creation of elegant and dense hedges, suitable
\nfor both private contexts and public spaces.
\nThe leaves are shiny, oval and leathery, of an intense and deep green, wider than
\nthose of the Angustifolia variety, but arranged in an orderly fashion along flexible and thin branches.
\nThe young shoots and the newest branches are tinged with a characteristic red-bronze color,
\nvery decorative, which contrasts pleasantly with the bright green of the mature leaves.
\nThis chromatic effect makes the plant interesting and dynamic for a good part of
\nthe year.
\nIn late spring or early summer, 'Brenelia' produces erect panicles of
\nsmall, white, scented flowers that are highly appreciated by pollinating insects. The flowering is
\nabundant and visually striking. It may be followed by the appearance of small,
\nroundish, black berries that persist on the plant for a long time, adding an element of
\nautumn and winter interest.
\nThe plant has relatively rapid growth and a dense, orderly shape. In
\nfree form, it can easily reach 3\u20134 metres in height, but it is equally
\nwell suited to regular pruning, which allows it to be kept in the form of a compact hedge, with
\ncontrolled growth even below 2 metres. Its natural tendency to branch from the base
\nallows for a uniform, well-closed plant barrier.
\nPrunus lusitanica 'Brenelia' adapts to a wide range of soils, including clay or limestone, as long as they are well drained. It tolerates full sun exposure but also performs well in partial shade. It is resistant to cold, wind and urban pollution, making it a reliable choice even in less than ideal environmental conditions. Once well-rooted, it also shows good drought tolerance.
